At 3 AM on March 26, 1916 a fast-moving, and deadly fire swept thru the all-wood three-story San Antonio Country Club House, burning it to the ground. Killed were six persons; five guests and one employee. Mrs. Stewart had originally escaped the flames, but had rushed back into the burning building in the mistaken belief her son, Maco Jr., was still inside.

The other guests who perished were Judge James Edward Webb Sr., couple James D. and Mary Walthall, and Mr. Homer Jones. Mrs. Ellen Cockrell was the employee who perished.

Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of John Henry and Laura Leata (Warren) Moore.
