James was the eldest son of Joseph Gahart and Vriginia Ardena Wren-Gahart. He was probably born around Waverly, Lincoln County, Missouri. The family moved to Kaufman County Texas by 1876 which is where his sister Evangeline Dena Gahart was born. (According to her death certificate) and the family later moved to Wills Point, Van Zandt, Texas. He married Emma Brandler on the October 4, 1892 in Van Zandt County. All of their children were born in Texas except their youngest son, James Overton Gahart, Jr. who was born in Colorado. James Sr. registered for the WWI draft in Wills Point, Van Zandt, Texas on Sept. 12, 1918 and he was a self-employed farmer. James Jr. was born about a year later in Colorado so it is safe to assume the family moved to Colorado between those dates. Olive Mae their oldest daughter stayed in Texas but the all younger children moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado area and lived there the remainder of their lives, except for Joseph Anton, Thomas Adolph and James Overton Jr. who both moved to California.
