Lewis was the son of Johann Adam & Barbara Fassler Daubenmire from Germany. On 8 August 1869, he married Elizabeth Anne Rinehart.

They were the parents of 10 children-Clara Victoria (Lephart), Sarah Barbara (Lephart), Dora D (Rickert), Matilda Ellen (Roebke), John Franklin, Mary, Lewis Edward, Jr., George Leroy, and twin unnamed infants.

Later generations spelled the surname Daubenmeyer.

Lewis' brother John married his wife Sarah's sister Elizabeth.
