OBITUARY: Adelia Clabaugh

Adelia Lillina Clabaugh, the daughter of William and Anna (Bruenger) Hermsmeier, was born northwest of Plymouth, Nebraska, on February 12, 1907, and passed away at Modesto, California, on February 27, 1990, at the age of 83 years and 17 days.

She grew up on a farm northwest of Plymouth, and was the youngest of 9 children. She attended country school until the 8th grade, and graduated from Swanton High School as salutatorian. She was piano accompanist for school and church during this time.

She attended the University of Nebraska and received her B.S. degree in education. She taught elementary school in Swanton, Guide Rock, Hebron and Hampton for a total of 29 years.

She was united in marriage to Clement Clabaugh on July 20, 1941. After their marriage they resided in Abilene, Texas, where Clem was a watchmaker. World War II called Clem to the Army and they moved to Maryland where he was stationed. When he was sent overseas, Adelia moved back to Swanton and taught school.

After the war they resided in Hebron, where she taught school until a daughter was born to them in 1947. She was a devoted mother.

In 1955, they moved to Aurora, where they purchased a jewelry store. She was also a Sunday School Teacher, 4-H leader and Brownie Scout leader at various times in her life.

In 1960, she began teaching one again in Hampton, and continued until retirement. She cared for her aunt, Della Bruenger, who lived in their home from 1969 to 1974.

During her retired years she was active in Senior Citizens and various music groups. She thoroughly enjoyed her 2 grandchildren, Troy and Mark Lanka.

After Clem's death on December 19, 1980, she resided with her brother Roy Hermsmeier and sister Minnie Hill on the home farm for 6 years. They enjoyed life and went on numerous tours, of which were British Columbia, New England States and Hawaii.

Since Roy's death she has been in the care of her daughter, Marjorie in California, for the past 3 ½ years.

She was dearly loved by her family and friends and they will miss her greatly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 7 brothers and sisters: Ella Crom, Elenora Hermsmeier, Walter Hermsmeier, Clara Ohmstede, Lawrence Hermsmeier, Bill Hermsmeier and Roy Hermsmeier.
