"His father was killed on the field of battle in Virginia, the early part of the late war, and John with his three brothers and two sisters were left orphans to begin the battle of life.
His early education was obtained from the country schools, assisted by his widowed mother.
The eventful life of the deceased was, to some extent, an illustration of the weaknesses of human nature, over which should be drawn the mantle of charity.
He was for a time connected editorially with the Pickens Sentinel and was a writer and reporter of no small ability, and commanded the admiration of its readers and the respect of his contemporaries.
He was always fair to those who differed with him, but true to his conviction of right. Though quick to resent an injury, he was ever ready to forgive, and was always generous and true to his friends.
He leaves many kindred and friends to mourn his untimely death.
The funeral services were held Tuesday at Liberty in the Presbyterian church by Dr J.R. Riley, and the body was interred in the old Liberty Church burying ground."

His father, George William Barzili Boggs is actually buried in Virginia but is memorialized on the headstone John shares with his mother, Elizabeth K. McWhorter Boggs, who died in 1886 and was one of the first burials in this portion of the cemetery, which had been purchased by the town of Liberty for a cemetery the same year she died. It is actually not the burying ground of the old Liberty Church; that section is nearby, closer to the tree line seen in the distance of the photos.
