Barber, Ione L., (Mrs. William E. Barber), a long time Irvine resident, died on October 11, 2006 in Tacoma Washington where she moved a year ago to be closer to family. Ione was born in 1918 in Kidder, South Dakota and grew up the oldest of seven children in a farm family during the depression. She attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls and then taught in a one room school house. In the summer of 1941, Ione traveled to southern California. She loved the sun and ocean, got a job in San Diego, an apartment overlooking La Jolla Cove, and did not return to South Dakota. At a USO Canteen, she met her future husband, Col. William E, Barber, when he was a young Marine Corporal, and they were married in October 1942. She became a loyal military wife, setting up a home many times over the next thirty years in bases all over the US and Bangkok, Thailand. She kept the home fires burning while her husband was away serving in three wars. Upon his retirement in 1971, they made a final move to the then new community of Irvine. This time, they settled in for a long stay. Ione was an active member of the community and of Red Hill Lutheran Church in Tustin. She had many long time dear friends in the area and played bridge for years with a group of fellow retired military wives. Ione Barber is survived by her son, John, and daughter, Sharon Waldo, and three grandchildren. She leaves behind a large extended family, including sisters, Gladys Britzius and Mary Wold and brother Orville Lea, all of Rapid City, South Dakota and many beloved nieces and nephews. She also leaves in-laws in Ohio and Kentucky, who embraced her as family from the day her husband brought her back to meet them for the first time in 1943. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly sixty years, Bill Barber; her daughter, Diane; her parents, Obert J. and Ella Lea, and her brothers Lowell, Eldeen, and John O. Lea. Ione Barber will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at the grave site of her husband, Col. William E. Barber, USMC, (ret). Remembrances made be made to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, 825 College Blvd., Suite 102 PMB 609, Oceanside, Ca. 92057.
