WILMINGTON — Joseph Holmes Davis, 85, retired banker and industrialist, died Thursday at his home here.
Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Oakdale Cemetery by Dr. B. Frank Hall and the Rev. D. G. Connette, Jr.
A native of Southport, he began his banking career with Carolina Savings and Trust Co. and was elected president in 1927. After that bank merged with Peoples Bank and Trust Co. in 1933 he resigned and purchased Spofford Cotton Mill.
He was director for several years of Wachovia Bank and Trust Co. here, with which Peoples Bank and Trust Co. merged in 1955 and was director emeritus of Wachovia at the time of his death. Other business interests included service on the boards of American Liberty Insurance Co. and the North Carolina Foundation of Research and Mental Health. He also served as secretary and treasurer of the Wilmington Morning Star and was vice president of Tidewater Power and Light Co before it was incorporated into Carolina Power and Light Co.
During World War II he was appointed a member of the War Labor Board by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Blue Davis; a son, J. Holmes Davis Jr. of Wilmington; three daughters, Mrs. George W. Trask Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S. C., Mrs. Ralph Nesbit of Richmond, Va. and Mrs. Robert S. Bridgers of Asheboro; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Cummings Mebane of Greensboro; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
