Moved to Iowa with his parents in 1855.

Married Amerett Hunter Taylor (widow of Matthew Taylor) 26 Feb 1857 in Buchanan County Iowa. Charles and Amerett had 3 Children Caleb, Clara, and John.

In 1863 he enlisted in the 9th Iowa infantry Company C. He became ill at Youngs Point Louisiana and died there.
