DEATH OF BERT KAIN. (family papers, no citation) The hospital family is in mourning over the death of one of their number, the faithful, genial Bert Kain, who for five years has been tying knots of friendship with all connected with that institution, from the administration down. He died on Friday, the 4th instant, at midnight, from the effects of a sunstroke received three weeks before. Bert was foreman of the farm, and on Friday, August 14th, he was directing the work for the farm hands who were stacking oats. He got on the stack to show the crew how he wanted a certain thing done, and worked for about half an hour when he became overheated and was taken to the hospital. From the first there was little hope of his recovery, yet everything was done for his comfort and all labored to fan into a flame the lingering spark of life about to be extinguished. Albert M. Kain was born in DeKalb county, Illinois, February 14, 1861. When five years old his parents moved to Iowa locating in Chickasaw county. Five years ago he came to Independence and found employment in the hospital as attendant. He gradually received promotion until he was made forman of the hospital farm. He was popular with all the large household of officers and employees, and there is general sorrow there over his untimely death. He leaves a mother, five sisters and three brothers to cherish his memory. The funeral occurred Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, services being held in the chapel at the hospital. The remains were sent to Tripoli for burial. His mother, four sisters and two brothers were here to attend the funeral, and they departed with their hearts full of gratitude for the many kindnesses shown their loved one during his long illness, by Dr. Hill and everyone at the hospital.
