Fr. Regimbal, vice president of GU, dies

The Rev. Clement Regimbal, Gonzaga University vice president and former director of the university’s Gonzaga-in-Florence program, died Monday following a lengthy illness. He was 76.

A memorial service will be at noon Thursday in the Jesuit House chapel on campus. The funeral Mass is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Aloysius Church with burial 11:30 a.m. Friday at Mount St. Michael’s cemetery.

A native of Moxee City, Washington, he graduated from Marquette High School in Yakima and St. Martin’s College in Lacey, Washington, before he entered the Society of Jesus in 1932.

He studied philosophy at Mount St. Michael’s here and received his bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga in 1938 and a master’s degree there in 1939. After receiving a master’s degree in French from Fordham University in New York, he returned to teach at Gonzaga for two years and then spent four years in theological study at Alma College in Alma, California.

Father Regimbal was ordained in San Francisco in 1945 and then went to the University of Paris for advanced study in French from 1946-1947. He returned to Gonzaga as head of the modern languages department in September 1947.

From 1948 until 1958, he was dean of faculties. He was assistant to the president and director of development from 1958 to 1961 and was named vice president in charge of development on September 19, 1961.

He served as resident director of Gonzaga-in-Florence — the overseas study program for GU juniors in Italy — from 1964 until July 1, 1980, when again he was named GU vice president for major fundraising activities for Gonzaga’s long-range development program.

Father Regimbal served on the steering committee of the Pacific Northwest Conference on Higher Education in 1952. He also had served as a director of the National League for Nursing and was a founding member of the joint accreditation committee of the American Hospital Association and National League for Nursing. He had serve on the faculties of Sacred Heart School of Nursing and Gonzaga University School of Nursing.

He also had served as president of the Spokane Area Safety Council and in 1981 was named to the Spokane Centennial Committee.

Survivors include his sisters Elsie Duke and Sister Ann Regimbal, both of Moxee City.

Fr Clement H. followed the lead of his uncle and mentor. But Joseph Adolphe Clement, aka Fr Clement Regimbal (1891-1933) did not live to see his nephew's ordination.
