LORD, Rowland R. Jim to family and friends, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 28, 2009, in his Quartz Hill home. He was 83. Born in Newark, New York, he moved to California at 15 with his family. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, a veteran of World War II. He then married Helen, his wife of 59 years. They moved to Quartz Hill in 1953, where they loved being surrounded by alfalfa fields and almond orchards and the small community where your neighbors always became your friends. He worked driving tractor-trailer rigs,
became a Dufrene Crane operator, did asphalt construction and then became a member of the Operating Engineers Local Union #12. He retired and enjoyed many years traveling, fishing and living life to the fullest with his wife and family. As a Charter Member of the Quartz Hill Veterans of Foreign War Post 3000, he enjoyed visiting his friends. But nothing made him happier than having his grandchildren and great-grandchildren over to visit. Jim is survived by his wife, Helen, and his 5 daughters: Janet Deborah, Judy, Becky and Julie; his sister Sandra: his sons-in-laws: Randy, Allen, Bruce, Jeff and Bill. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren along with many friends. Jim was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Paula, and by 7 of his brothers and sisters, most recently his brother Richard. His struggles are over and he has joined his family in Heaven. Although he will be missed, he is believed to be walking with his siblings, fishing pole in hand, having the reunion hes been praying for. A celebration of Jims life and memory will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Quartz Hill VFW Post 3000, located at 4342 West Avenue L.
