John R. "Jack" Alkire, 78, of Hoopeston, died at 10:10 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the Cape Coral Hospital in Cape Coral, Florida.

Born March 27, 1930, at Cheneyville, Illinois, he was the son of Mark R. and Ola M. (Smith) Alkire. He married Lula M. Wallen on Feb. 25, 1950 at Rossville, Illinois. She preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 1998.

Jack is survived by his children, Marvin Alkire, Linda (Bill) Greenwood and Jeff (Connie) Alkire, all of Hoopeston; one sister, Pat Brinneman of Fort Myers, Florida; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Walter, Mark and Jimmie.

For most of his life, Jack was a mechanic in Hoopeston. He joined the Hoopeston Auxiliary Police in 1961 and retired in 1990. For the past several years, he looked forward to spending the winter months in Fort Myers, Florida with his sister, Pat. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and having coffee in the mornings with his friends. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and eating tacos at Jeff and Connie's.

Burial will be in the Floral Hill Cemetery at Hoopeston.
