He was signed by James Rolston to serve with Company H of the 10th Regiment of Virginia Infantry in 1861. He was wounded in the head at the Battle of McDowell on 8 May 1862 and again was wounded at Manassas in August 1862. This must have been severe as he appeared absent (wounded) through October of 1864.
