Recipient of the Sacrifice Medal (posthumous)

Trooper, with The Royal Canadian Dragoons based in Petawawa, Ontario. Aged 22, he was from Mississauga, Ontario. Born in southern Lebanon, Marc immigrated with his family to Canada in 2000 and joined the military in 2006. He was deployed as a member of 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group serving with NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He was killed and four soldiers were injured when an improvised explosive device detonated near their armoured vehicle during a patrol in the Shah Wali Kot District, northeast of Kandahar City.

Tpr Diab was described as an energetic, enthusiastic and dedicated soldier who loved to joke around and make people laugh. An avid soccer player, he enjoyed sports and outdoor activities including driving his Jeep cross-country. He was also a talented keyboard player, taught Arabic and led annual summer camps for children at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church. Marc was very family-oriented and especially close to his mother Jihan and girlfriend Mary. He is survived by his parents, Hani Diab and Jihan Falah-Diab, sisters Jessica (Fadi Diab) and Maya (Ghassan Ghanem) and extended family along with his beloved Mary Barakat and her family.

Funeral Mass held Tuesday, March 17, 2009 in Our Lady of Lebanon Church, Toronto.

There have been 112 Canadian military fatalities in the Afghanistan conflict since 2002. One diplomat and two aid workers have also died.
