John grew up on a farm in rural Thomas County, GA. When war broke out he enlisted May 15 1862 at Savannah, Chatham County GA as a private in the 50th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company E, "Thomas County Rangers", Confederate States Army. Two months later on July 17, 1862, Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton sent the 50th Georgia Volunteers to Richmond to join the Army of Northern Virginia under its commanding general Robert E. Lee. John was wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, 17 September 1862 during the Battle of Antietam. Given a disability discharge 21 May 1863, he then returned to his home in Thomas County GA where he married on 23 April 1865 to Sallie Sherrod, daughter of William Sherrod and Sophie Marsh King, issue; 10 children. Sarah died 12 July 1901. A couple of years later John sold his farm in Pavo, GA and moved to Polk County, FL for a time. He eventually moved back to Georgia and married Addie Johnson 14 December 1905 in Thomas County, GA, issue; 2 children.
