Julia Ann Jewell Smalley
Julia Ann Jewell Smalley was born in Benton County, Iowa, March 15, 1848, and departed this life at Valentine, Nebraska, December 29,1922, age 74 years, 9 months and 14 days.
She was united in marriage to Samuel Cruise Smalley on October 11, 1866, at Decorah, Iowa.
To this union 9 children were born, 4 sons and 5 daughters. One son, Frank Smalley and one daughter Mrs. Rosetta Randall, are deceased. Those remaining are Mrs. Eva Metz, of Dorsey, Nebr.,; Samuel E. Smalley of Valentine; Mrs. Alice E. Mansfield of Shell Lake, Wisc.; Laban G.
Smalley of Williston, N.D.; Mrs. Clara M. Hutchinson of Omaha, Neb.; David G. Smalley of Beaver Dam, Wisc; and Miss Lillian M. Smalley of Chicago, Illinois.
Soon after they were married they moved to Belleville, Minn., where they engaged in farming for a time. Later they returned to Iowa and resided near Storm Lake for some years. Later they came to Nebraska among the early settlers and took a preemption in Holt county, near Dorsey. After proving up on that place they went to Keya Paha County and took a homestead near Norden, where they lived for several years. While residing there Mr. Smalley met with an accident which resulted later in his death. The wife and mother being left with the care of her large family of children, used her homestead right and filed on land a mile west of the former homestead. After proving up on this she moved to Lancaster, Wisc., where she lived for seven years. She then came back to Nebraska, and located in Valentine, where she has lived for the past nineteen years.
About four years ago she was deprived of her eyesight and had to depend upon her children to care for her. Although she had suffered a paralytic stroke about six months ago and was constantly cared for by her daughter Lillian, yet she remained happy and cheerful to the last.
Her greatest joy was in attending church and Sabbath school. She joined the Methodist church when very young, and remained a faithful member, dying in the triumphs of a Christian faith. She was a member of the W.C.T.U., and was active in good works-ever ready to help in time of need.
Besides her children she leaves 27 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, and one brother, Martin C. Jewell of Madison, Wisconsin.
The funeral was held from the Methodist church on Wednesday at 2 p.m., conducted by the pastor, O.E. Richardson, Interment was made in the Mount Hope cemetery.
