Melvin was born April 13, 1918, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Blanch and William Adkins. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for the Fort Worth ISD in the maintenance department.
Survivors: Wife of 62 years, Frances Adkins; daughter, Ginger Sweatmon and husband, Robert; son, Ray Adkins; nephews, Lowell Bryan and wife, Kathy, and Bill Bryan and wife, Laura; and niece, Norma Hackett and husband, Malcolm.
