William Calvin Cossey was the son of John Cossey and Susan Hartwick. During the Civil War, he enlisted on March 5, 1862 at Point Remove, Conway, Arkansas as a Private in Company "G" of the 31st Arkansas Infantry Regiment CSA under the command of Captain T. J. Nunnelly. He was wounded having his right thumb shot off at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 18, 1863. He was listed as absent and sick on October 31, 1863 and discharged for disability on November 15, 1864.

He was married to Elizabeth Isabelle "Ibbie" Cagle on February, 1864 in Searcy, Arkansas. They had six children.
