He had a good life, although he lost his father at the age of three. His wonderful mother was very strong raising her children in the Depression years.
Gil enlisted in the Navy in WWII and spent his time in the Pacific area. He participated in five invasions, including the last two, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. For this he received a Purple Heart, Silver Star, and five Battle Stars.
Returning home after three years in the Pacific, he married his highschool sweetheart, Betty Ann. They left St. Louis for Iowa to attend school and moved to California to complete his education. He received a B.A. in Business Administration from University of Southern California (USC).
He worked in insurance and real estate and opened his own office in Van Nuys, CA. He also obtained a general contractors license. Between the two, he was very successful and retired in his early fifties so he could travel and spend time with his wife, three daughters, and grandchildren.
He was very familiar with the St. George area, having a daughter and her family who moved here in 1977. He would spend some time working on projects for the St. George Catholic Church while visiting his daughter many times throughout the year.
He and Betty moved to St. George full-time in 1990, having a home in Winchester Hills. He continued to work on projects for the Catholic Church. The new church was completed in 1991, the new Kuzy Hall in 1995.
He lost his first love after 55 beautiful years in March 2002. He continued to be very active in the Catholic Church and was construction manager for their new 15,000 square foot storage building, which required about 4 years from zoning, planning, etc., to completion in 2005.
He married a long-time, dear friend, Marilyn Janicki in January 2006.
He leaves his wife, Marilyn; three daughters, Linda (Jim) McCloskey, Karen (Darrel) Humphries, and Gale (Barry) Holtby; step-daughter, Judy Brader; step-son, Tom Janicki; 7 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at the St. George Catholic Church. Following the Rosary, friends and family will be invited to share memories. Interment will take place at the Tonaquint Cemetery.
