Winnie Davis Walker was the youngest child of Samuel Franklin Walker and Margaret Emily Baker. Winnie's mother died when she was just a girl and she went to live with her older sister, Nora, in Fayetteville, AR. After her school years, Winnie moved to Bentonville, AR and lived with another sister, Jessie, who had recently been widowed. Jessie had a boarding house and rented rooms out. Winnie had been trained as a milliner and was working making ladies hats.

Arlan Soapes moved into Bentonville from the family farm and was a roomer at Jessie's. It was at Jessie's that Arlan & Winnie met. They were married on 20 June 1920 in Bentonville, AR. They were the parents of 2 daughters, Susan & Betty.
