Mary A. Smith was born May 16, 1931, at Chicago, Ill., to Dr. William and Helen Shepard. She was raised at Des Moines, Iowa and graduated from St. Joseph Academy. Mary married Edwin Aukes and he preceded her in death. She married James F. Smith on Sept. 3, 1966, at St. Paul and they resided on their farm place at Pilot Grove. James preceded her in death on April 12, 2006. Mary has lived with her daughter Pat at Blomkest these past two years and recently has been a resident of the Golden Living Center in Olivia. Mary enjoyed working as a farmwife, helping in the fields and especially running lunches to "the guys". She always kept her lawn looking very nice and took such good care of her many cats. Mary collected dolls, beanie babies, teapots, and thimbles. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and being up north at the summer cabin on the Whitefish Chain of Lakes. One of her favorite pastimes was going to the casino with her husband, Jim. Mary especially cherished time spent with her grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Randall) Fath of Blomkest, stepdaughters, Lori (Steven) Meyer of Welcome and Kristine (Jim) Bowder of LeSeuer, stepsons Jamie (Robin) Smith of Blue Earth and Scott (Julie) Smith of Blue Earth, sister-in-law Virginia (Ronald) Ristau of Elmore, her 11 grandchildren: Kyle, Brooke, Brad, Josha, Janica, Jarin, Summer, Taylor, Crystal, Jordan, and Brody; and numerous great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands and her grandson Jamis Smith.
