After over half a century of active participation in business on Main St., A. H. VanDeWalker, proprietor of the B.A. Curtiss store, passed to his rest about 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning in Utica Memorial hospital Last week he successfully underwent a major operation at the hospital but succumbed when bronchial pneumonia set in.

Mr. VanDeWalker, best known simply as "Bert", Was born in Osceola, January 27, 1869. He attended Ives Seminary in 1881 and Cazenovia Seminary in 1882. In 1887 he came to Camden and for seven years was a clerk in the B. A. Curtiss Co. grocery store. In 1894 he purchased a hand laundry which he conducted in the Hope block and five years later, to provide room for expansion of the laundry business, moved to the north store of the Opera House block where he developed one of the finest laundry plants in this section of the state.

In 1908, he returned to the Curtiss firm when Harry W. Curtiss, a son of B. A. Curtiss, retired. Following the death of B. A. Curtiss on March 15, 1923, Mr. VanDeWalker became sole owner and had since continued the business.

In 1903 Mr. VanDeWalker was elected supervisor from the town of Camden on the Democratic ticket and was the first Democratic supervisor from the town since 1886. He served several terms and in 1906 was clerk of the Oneida County Board of Supervisors.

He was a member of Philanthropic Lodge, F. & A. M. and Camden Odd Fellows Lodge, and served 15 years in the Camden Fire Department, nine years as the fire company foreman and two years as chief of the department. At the time of his death he was secretary of the Forest Park Cemetery Association. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

An enthusiastic baseball fan and bowler, he had actively supported both sports locally, for the past few years sponsoring the "Van's" team in Class A bowling at the local alleys.

On November 4, 1895, he married Miss Lillian Curtiss, only daughter of B. A. Curtiss, who survives as do two daughters, Mrs. George K. Esmay, Utica, and Mrs. William W. Manning, Endicott.

Funeral services in charge of B. A. Sanborn & Son, were conducted Monday at 3 p.m. at his late home, 104 Main street.

The Rev. Thomas J. Williams, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiated. Those acting as bearers were Charles Harden, Dexter Hubbard, Edmund Malone, Otto Werner, Brewster Giles and Kenneth Ostrander. All of the stores were closed during the hour of the service in courtesy to one of the fellow merchants.

The services were largely attended by friends, relatives and fraternal friends. There were many floral tributes; included other than pieces from friends and relatives were those from the Methodist church, Philanthropic Lodge, F. & A. M.; Camden Lodge, No. 718, I.O.O.F.; Rebekah Lodge, Class A and Class B of the Bowling League, trustees of Camden Cemetery Association, Camden Business Bureau; B.A. Hopinks Sons; Camden Wire Co.; Field and Start Corp.; Board of Managers of the Home for Homeless, Utica; Thos. G. McMahon Co., Inc.; Wind's Bakery, Wonder Bakery Co.; Frank Lobello Produce Co.; and the B. A. Curtiss Co. employees.

Interment was made in Forest Park cemetery.

Attending from out-of-town were Miss Blanche VanDeWalker, Mr. and Mrs. William Jones, Miss Minnie Slawson and Mr. F. J. Slawson, Utica; Mr. Ernest VanDeWalker, Mr. and Mrs. K. R. Stephenson, Osceola, Mrs. Roman, New Hartford; Mrs. Richard Manning, Chadwicks; Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Simmons, Barneveld and Mrs. Reginald Davies, Cassville; Mrs. R. S. Johnson, Mr. Smith Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. K Esmay, Utica; Mr. and Mrs. William Manning, Endicott; Mrs. William R. Clendinning, East Orange, N. J.; Mr. Frank Lobello and Mr. George McCann, Syracuse.
