The son of German-born Philip & Pennsylvania-born Catherine M. Deichler and stepson of Elizabeth Ann (Leaman) Deichler, in 1860 he was a shoemaker living with his family in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.


A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:

  1. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Lancaster July 26, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a corporal with Co. K, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.
  2. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Lancaster July 8, 1864, mustered into federal service at Philadelphia July 15 as a sergeant with Co. C, 197th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 11, 1864.


In 1870, he was living in Ephrata, Lancaster County, working as a "green grocer". He married Emma Jane Fox and fathered Mary May (b. 03/30/84) and Lottie G. (b. 10/05/88 - married George Tippery). A hotel keeper during much of his post-war life, he died at his residence in the Washington Hotel. He had been a member of Thomas Post No. 84, G.A.R.
