James married Margaret "Mazy" Jordan on 14 January 1841 in Benton County, Tennessee by S. V. Aden, Justice of the Peace.

He was brought by his son, Joseph Albert "Joe Ab" Cowell, to Arkansas in 1893 after his wife died.
