Herman's parents came from Saxony, Germany. In 1898, Herman purchased the General Store in Bleiblerville from Robert Bleibler, an early settler of Bleiblerville. In later years, this store was owned and operated by his daughter, Celesta, and her husband, Casper Balke. It was then known as the Balke General Store until its closing.
