In the family lineage notes, it states that Roscoe Artley married Lillie Belle Rowe. If Chester Roscoe went by his middle name of Roscoe, this might explain why all of Lillie's children went by their middle names instead of their first names.
The 1910 U. S. Census shows that Roscoe rented his general farm.
Ross died from complications following an appendectomy. His widow, Lillie, was left with a two-year-old (Hube) and a six-week old (Russ) to raise.
After what was apparantly [sic] a successful operaton for appendicities performed Monday afternoon by Drs. F. Kuhn of Elkhart, M. A. Farver and B. F. Teters of this place, Ross Artley a prominent young farmer of Middlebury, succumbed at 10 o'clock yesterday morning from ensuing complications. Peritonitis developed Wednesday morning, accompanied by severe vomiting spells, and he sank rapidly without a hope of recovery. He was 25 years old.
Mr. Artley did not feel any symptions of impending illness until last Friday and was not confined to his bed until Sunday, when the acute nature of the attack rendered an operation an immediate necessity. He leaves his wife and two sons, Hubert and Worden [sic], aged two years and two months respectively and his parents Mr. and Mrs. G. D. [sic] Artley of Middlebury; four brothers Lewis, west of town, George, Donald and Joseph, all of Middlebury; one sister, Wilma, of Middlebury; a half brother, Clyde Pickrell, of Bristol; and a half sister, Mrs. H. J. Shellenberger [Edna], northwest of town. So certain were his friends that his recovery was a matter of a short time only, that his unexpected death was a severe shock. . . Source: Ross's obituary.
