Alice Bitner Castleton was born on March 11, 1875 in Big Cottonwood, outside Salt Lake City. Her father was Breneman Barr Bitner, American born of German descent and her mother was Martina Halseth Bitner, born and converted in Norway, emigrated to Utah at age 17. Alice was the fifth of their twelve children.
Alice met her husband Wallace C. Castleton while working at ZCMI; they married on September 7, 1898. She bore five children; Virginia was the third. Their home was filled with music: singing, piano, violin and cello. Alice loved learning and was very dedicated in church service; she served on the General Relief Society Board. She was socially inclined, had many friends and adored her family.
