Josiah Dickinson Hank was born in Louisa County, Virginia on October 5, 1835, the first child of Jehu Hank and Susan Berger Hank. He was educated in Virginia and when only nineteen years old, he entered the ministry. Like his father before him, he was a member of the Baltimore Conference until the War between the states, then both he and his father became members of the Virginia Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, South. At the time of his death in 1909, he had been a presiding elder for many years. He married his first cousin Anna Berger in 1862. They became the parents of four children. Anna died in 1868.
