Mr. L. Yale Miller, Sr., age 90, of Oakwoods Road, Wilkesboro died Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Mr. Miller was born in Wilkes County, February 13, 1919, to Claude Young and Lois Yale Miller.

He attended Wilkesboro High School and Lees-McRae College, where he was not only a good student but captain of the football team. He was an active member of Wilkesboro United Methodist Church and the Men's Sunday school class. He had cooked BBQ chicken for the church chicken q's and had stirred many a pot of Brunswick stew. He has helped with the restoration of some of the things in the old part of the church and helped build the boxes and install the pipes for the organ. He went on many mission trips with the church to Homestead, FL, Puerto Rico, Georgia, and Costa Rica. Mr. Miller served in the US Navy during World War II. He worked for the US Postal Service as postmaster for the Wilkesboro Post Office until his retirement. Mr. Miller was elected the first president of the Wilkesboro Lions Club when it was formed and he remained a member until it merged with the North Wilkesboro Chapter. He was one of the last living original members of the Wilkesboro Business Men's Club. He served on the zoning board of the Town of Wilkesboro and was on the Board of Directors of Wilkes Boys Town. Mr. Miller was also a former member of the Wilkesboro Fire Department.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Wright Miller.

Mr. Miller is survived by one daughter, Virginia (Jenny) M. Miller of Moravian Falls; two sons, L. Yale Miller, Jr. of Jamestown and George William Miller of Wilkesboro; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great, great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held 2:00, Tuesday, March 3, at Wilkesboro United Methodist Church with Dr. David Calhoun officiating. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 will be in Mountain Park Cemetery.

The family will receive at Wilkesboro United Methodist Church from 1:00 until 2:00 prior to the service.
