The following is from Contributor Dennis Brandt (47232334)
In 1860 he was a blacksmith living with his family in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He married Margaret H, Nichol and fathered Agnes S. (b. 01/15/64 - married George Weber), Harry (b. 07/22/65), Henry (b. @1868), John (b. @1869), and Sarah (b. 10/03/77 - married Harry T. Smith).

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service with two regiments:
1, Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-three at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 27, 1861.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-five in Lancaster September 23, 1861, mustered into federal service there September 24 as a corporal with Co. K, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, and promoted to sergeant November 1, 1862. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer February 9, 1864, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and re-mustered there February 12, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865, near Alexandria, Virginia.

He died at the home of Charles W. Grees from a "stroke of apoplexy followed by varolersis [?]". He had been a member of Lancaster's Thomas Post No. 84, G.A.R.
