Mary Ann is the second of nine children born to James Campbell and Margaret Dennison in Goderich, Huron, Ontario, Canada. At age 14 she married James Lang Hamilton in Marwick, Huron Canada. Four years later in the spring of 1844 the couple joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and in 1846 arrived in Nauvoo with their three small children. Six years later in 1852 the family migrated to the Great Salt Lake Valley with the Robert Wimmer Company. Included in the overland crossing were her six children Sarah Jane (age 10), John Dennison Campbell (8), James Campbell (6), Joseph Campbell (4), Elizabeth Ann (2), and Caroline Matilda (infant). Mary Ann eventually became the mother of 15 children, three of which died in childbirth. Her husband died in 1875; she died 35 years later in 1910.
