James Henry Johnson, 85, was born the son of Albert S. Johnson and Sarah Alice Frey Johnson on March 18, 1922 in Alton, MO, and died May 26, 2007, in Memphis, TN. He was united in marriage Sept. 15, 1941 in Salem, AR to Pauline McGhee who preceded him in death July 31, 2000. He was united in marriage on Sept. 15, 2000 in Salem, AR, to Lena McGhee.
He was a decorated veteran, proudly serving his country in the United States Army during World War II. While serving he received numerous awards and medals, including the Bronze Star and the Rifleman Expertise Badge and also fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was schooled in Walnut Ridge, AR, and became an automobile mechanic. He was instrumental in getting a ferry on Eleven Point River near Billmore, MO, which he operated for eight years. He was later employed by General Motors in St. Louis, retiring after many years of service.
He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy near Myrtle for several years and later became a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Cave Springs, MO, where he also served as deacon.
He was a member and past officer of the VFW Post 10687 in Wright City, MO.
He is survived by: his wife, Lena of the family home in Wright City, MO; one son, Waymon James Johnson and wife, Diana of Stockton, MO; two daughters, Lois Weber and husband, Darrel of Warrenton, MO; and Mary Woody and husband, Brett of Wright City,MO; four step-children, Linda Wicker of Myrtle, MO; Darrell McGhee, Richard McGhee and Dortheta Young, all of West Plains, MO; three grandchildren, Doug Johnson of Bolivar, MO; Sara-Beth Vestal of Warrenton, MO; and Simone Nicole Woody of Wright City, MO; seven step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, Tyler and Trevor Johnson and Mary Shayden Vestal; eight step-great-grandchildren; several nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; one son, Bobby Lee Johnson; one granddaughter, Angela Dawn Johnson; one step-grandson, Brian McGhee; two brothers, Carl and Lawrence Johnson and one sister, Anice Mudock.
Services were June 2 in the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer. Burial followed in Cotton Creek Cemetery with arrangements by Carter Funeral Home of Thayer.
