James Toliver Hawkins was the only son of Lewis J. Hawkins and Hannah Rosanna Matheny. His father, Lewis J Hawkins, enlisted in the military service 22 Aug 1861 when his mother was very pregnant with him. James Toliver was born 23 days later, on 14 Sept 1861. I wonder if Lewis ever got to see his newborn son... Lewis served in the military only 4 months 7 days and died in the civil war only 3 months and 15 days after the birth of his firstborn son.

The record of James Toliver's birth, his father's death, as well as his marriage date were all recorded in the Bible of his maternal grandfather, John Matheny.

When Toliver was 5 years old his mother married James Green (25 Feb 1867). James raised him as his own son. Toliver had two sisters that were born to James and Hannah. They were members of the High Shoal Baptist church.

James Toliver married Parthania Goode on 10 August 1881, and they had 8 children (4 girls and 4 boys) but the first two boys died as infants. James Toliver was a farmer and a barber by trade. He and Parthania had been married for 52 years when she died in 1926.

By the time of the 1930 census he was living in Spartanburg, SC, and was married to Clara Belle Reel Walker, the widow of Charles C. Walker, and the mother of one young daughter. Toliver and Clara were married until his death in 1933.
