Joseph Wayne Bates of SR 285, Caldwell, died Wednesday, Jan 16, 1991, in the Hospice Center of Zanesville following a three year illness. Mr Bates retired Jan 1, 1991 from the Ohio Department of Transportation in Caldwell. He was a WW II Army veteran and attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Caldwell. Born Sept 26, 1919 in Fredericksdale, he was a son of the late Joseph and Violet Rose Hague Bates. Surviving are his wife, Rosella M Tolbert Bates, whom he married June 18, 1973; one daughter, Mary Jane Conaway of South Zanesville; one son, Jessie Frank Conaway of Zanesville; two sisters, Mary Oliver of Summerfield and Laura Kirkbride of Nashport; one brother, Gilman Bates of Summerfield; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters. Calling hours were from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at McVay-Perkins Funeral Home in Caldwell, where services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday with Rev Jim Davidson officiating. Burial was in Fredericksdale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Center of Zanesville.
