in Jefferson County, New York and died October 19, 1908 in Tama County, Iowa
where he was an early pioneer of the county's Columbia Township.

Eli came to Tama County several times to hunt along the Iowa River and Deer
Creek before any white men settled in the county. He was associated with the
American Fur Company, trading with trappers and Indians.

His first trip to Iowa was in 1836 and in 1842 he and his wife settled in

Columbia Township on what was later to be known as the John Walz homestead. In
the late 1850's the family moved to Section 3 in Columbia Township where they
built a log cabin which was to be their home for over half a century.

valuable historical information. He was present at the laying of the corner
stone of the first State Capitol in Iowa City. He was a direct descendant of
Stephen Hopkins who came to America on the Mayflower.

June 15, 1823 in Highland County, Ohio, the daughter of Nathaniel and Catherine
(Dickey) Daugherty. Nancy Jane died September 22, 1914 and was buried beside
