He was manager of the "Odgen Junction" and later manager of the George A. Lowe Company. In 1882 he founded E. Stratford & Sons furniture business. He served as a deputy collector and assessor of Cache County.
From 1883 until his death in 1899 he served as bishop of the Ogden 4th ward. He is the father of nine children: Edwin Alfred, Eliza Ann, Jesse George, Charles Henry, Francis William, Lillian Marianna, Albert Edgar, Egbert Chapman, and Horace Barwell.
