The late John D. Weed, whose death is recorded today, was the father of Mrs. E.J. Burritt, of this city, at whose residence he died, and of Seth Weed, late of this city. He also leaves another son and daughter, the former residing West and the latter near Syracuse. Mr. Weed's death was directly due, it is believed, to paralysis, he having been prostrated while attending a religious meeting just a week before his death. – Ithaca Journal

Another Christian laborer has been called home. The late John D. Weed died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. E.J. Burritt of Ithaca, the 28th day of May. While returning from a religious meeting he was stricken with paralysis, and lived one week when the angelic message came, "Thy Father calls thee Home."

He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss. His oldest son, Edward F. resides at Big Springs, Texas; his second son, Seth R., whose home is in Binghamton; Mrs. E.J. Burritt, Ithaca, and Mrs. S.P. Tryon near Syracuse.

The subject of this Memoir was born in the town of Scipio in 1820. When but six years of age his parents moved to the farm now owned by R.R. Weed. His first school days was in one of the first school houses built in town located on the James Thompson farm. His first church attendance and Sunday school instruction was at the old Presbyterian church which was also located on the Thompson farm. Later it was removed to Union Springs. Mr. Weed cast his first vote for Harrison the grandfather of President Harrison and has been identified with the Republican party and has served as Justice of the Peace several terms. He was kind and companionable and had a pleasant word for everyone he met.

When more than 40 years of age while attending a series of meetings at Fleming Hill, conducted by Rev. Wm. Searles, of Auburn, he was led to feel the need of Christ. From this bright happy day his firm faith never wavered; this cheerful trust brightened his pathway to the promised land. Only a short time before he died he said to his daughter, "I wish you would sing." When asked, Father what shall we sing? He said, "Rock of Ages" and with them sang the whole hymn through, and his last words were "Rock of Ages, cleft for me let me hide myself in thee."

The funeral services were conducted by the Baptist minister, and attended by a large number of kind and sympathizing friends. He was interred in the Ithaca cemetery until the morning of the Resurrection.

Oh how sweet it will be in the beautiful land,
So free from all sorrow and pain,
With songs on our lips and harps in or hand,
We shall meet our dear loved ones again.
