Sarah was the daughter of Isaac and Jane Blair Frank. She made fine shirts in the Chicago, Illinois area as a young woman. She was married first to Hugh McElheny in 1865 who joined the Union army in the Civil War and was killed two weeks after they were married. She then married George Strayer in 1868 and had four children with him: Minnie Jane, Frank Everet (b 7 May 1872 IL, d 21 Dec 1946 Los Angeles, CA), Mary Jane and Della.
