The following was taken from The History of the Elijah Smith Family booklet

John Peter was a very large handsome man. He was known for his exceptional and unusual strength and vigor. Once he held a buggy back by his strength so the horse could not pull it. At another time when two men were trying to lift a log, without success, John Peter lifted it alone. Then he picked up the tongue of a sawmill engine that men were having trouble moving and guided it down "jail-house hill" all by himself.
