In Memory of Rev. C.S. Watson
Rev. Charles Samuel Watson who passed his 94th birthday on Nov 10, 1953, and who has been making his home in Newgulf with a daughter, Mrs. Geo. S. Riser for a number of years, died in the Newgulf Hospital at 2:45 Sunday morning, Jan 19, 1954, after a lingering illness.
Rev. Watson was born in Arkansas and came to Texas when he was about 7. He spent a total of about 40 years in the ministry of the Christian Church in various Texas towns. He studied for the ministry at Add-Ran College which later became the Texas Christian University located at Ft. Worth, Texas. The early part of his ministry was in Williamson and Lee Counties where he served about 25 years. The next 16 years he served in Anderson County. He was married to Miss Martha Jane Howell in Goliad County, Texas, about 1880. Mrs. Watson died in Huntsville, Texas on September 20, 1937, and was buried in Huntsville. Rev. Watson leaves surviving him seven children, 24 grandchildren, and 34 great-grandchildren. All of the grandchildren except five attended his funeral. His children are: Mar. G.S. Riser of Newgulf; Mrs. W.A. Welborn of Ft. Worth; Mrs. H.W. Wood of Elkhart, TX;Mrs. C.J. Wilder of Lufkin, Miss Ellie Watson of Bloomington, TX; Mr. W.T. Watson of Glen Ellen, CA; and Mr. P.W. Watson of Boling, TX.
Funeral services were held at the Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton, TX at 10:00 o'clock Monday morning, January 11, 1954, and burial was in Huntsville, TX at 3 PM the same day.
Rev. Dick Tarr, Pastor of the Christian Church at MontAlba, TX in Anderson County, which church was organized and built by Rev. Watson in 1913, was in charge of the services. Rev. Wayne Smith, Pastor of the Baptist Church at Boling, offered the prayer. Mrs. H.A. Swem of Newgulf played the music and Mrs. H.W. Mecklenburg, also of Newgulf, sang a solo.
At the cemetery, Mr. Will Oliphant of Huntsville, a layman friend of Rev. Watson's made a nice talk. He and Rev. Watson had exchanged promises many years ago that whichever one of them died first, the other would conduct the funeral services."
