Frederick Richmond Brownell, born in Johnston, R. I., 28 November 1837, admitted to the Rhode Island bar 1864, member of R. I. Legislature, Judge of Justice Court, Little Compton Town and Probate Clerk, and Selectman.
Frederick was the son of Jonathan Brownell of Little Compton, R. I., born 31 March 1792 in Westport, Mass, died 29 August 1877 Little Compton, R.I. Educated at Union College, N. Y., soldier in the War of 1812, Brigadier-General of the Rhode Island militia (married 2 November 1815, Elizabeth, daughter of Davis Simmons, and grand daughter of Capt. George Simmons of the Revolutionary Army)
Frederick married 1 February 1866, Annie Dykes Coggeshall, daughter of Samuel W. Coggeshall, D. D., a descendant of John Coggeshall, first president of the Colony of Rhode Island.
Frederick and Annie had five children:
Francis H., born April 21, 1867, graduated Brown Univ. 1888, lawyer;
Mariah Louise, born November 30, 1868 [married Charles H. Berryman];
Frederick R., born March 15, 1872;
Annie Dykes, born 15 Mar 1872 - died 9 Mar 1873
Charlotte, born April 5, 1876.
