He and Helen were the parents of three children. Mildred became ill, and in 1929 the family moved to Southern California in an attempt to improve her health. Sadly, she died there in 1930, and the young widower and his children moved back to Mason City.
On April 30, 1932, Bernard eloped with "the widow lady down the street", Mrs. Doris Buchanan. Doris had also experienced great loss, losing her husband, son, and brother within months of each other in 1929. A year after marrying, Bernard and Doris had another child, and the Pixley family was now complete.
In 1936 the Pixleys moved back to Southern California, this time settling in Alhambra. In 1965 he and Doris moved to their retirement home in Hemet, Califoria. Bernard died there on September 18, 1980 of a heart attack.
