Mr. Cates was a farmer. He was an honorary member of Harvest Moon Grange and a member of the Thorndike Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are a son, Herman Cates of Troy; a daughter, Mrs. Louise Payson of Belfast; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Thorndike Congregational Church. The Rev. George Fowler of Unity officiated. Burial was in the East Thorndike Cemetery.
