"The LaFayette Sun" - April 18, 1934:

A Tribute.

When the soft mantle of death encompassed the figure of Thomas Jefferson Burton on April 3rd and he went the way of all flesh a friendly and picturesque character is left only a memory in the hearts of hundreds of friends and relatives.
Born of pioneer parentage, his mother the oldest daughter of Thomas Jefferson Brooks, who settled in this county in the early thirties and his father the oldest son of Jacob T. Burton, who also was a pioneer, he was born and bread to a living which required energy and often hardships.
Losing both parents when quite young he was reared in the home of his maternal grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Brooks, whose name he bore.
When quite young man he was married to Miss Fannie Upchurch, with whom he lived happily for fifty-six years.
A man of strong family instinct his family's well-being and happiness were ever nearest his heart.
Five children, all grown to maturity, are taking their places in the world – Charles B. and George E. Burton, of LaFayette; Mrs. Hettie Weaver, of Milltown; Mrs. Watson Williams, of Macon, Ga., and Miss Josie Burton, of Milltown.
Family affection is a strong bond among them and devotion to father and mother is a beautiful concern of every child.
In a day when even these close ties are often desecrated, it is comforting to see the shining existence of the most sacred and beautiful of all relations of family life.
Living for over forty years in his old home near Milltown the roots of his being were sunk deep in the soil that he knew and loved.
He was a consistent member of the Christian church for over forty years.
He was a man of sincere and strong convictions and he realized that work was the greatest blessing of man and, as along as this physical strength, allowed, work was his greatest delight.
Despite the handicap of having only one arm he, with undaunted energy, was always able to provide a comfortable living for his family.
Traveling over the county, as he did for many years in his business, he perhaps knew more people than any man in Chambers County.
Friendliness with him was an art, born of his innate kindness.
And it has been truly said that men are only great as they are kind, and valuating the character of Thomas Jefferson Burton by that scale, he was surely one of God's noblemen.
Cheerful, friendly, kindly, working and getting his way through life with courage and without question and at last coming to the end in the old home where he had lived so long and loved so well, at peace with God and man, his body was laid to rest covered with flowers, imbued with love of the multitude who had known his splendid life.
"Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the end of that man is peace."
