World War II

Ernest Bork enlisted in the Army in July 1939. In 1941 he was stationed with the 2nd U. S. Calvary Division, 14th Calvary Regiment, Troop F, Camp Funston, Fort Riley, Kansas. When the Army disbanded the Cavalry he became a member of the 1st Special Service Force (also called "The Black Devils" or "The Devil's Brigade"), a select group of American and Canadian soldiers stationed at Fort William Henry Harrison, Helena, Montana. He served in battle in the Aleutian Islands, the Sicilian and Italian invasions, and the Anzio Beachhead.

He died on June 4, 1944, during the battle for Rome, Italy. The Germans were forced to withdraw and on June 5, 1944, the Allied Troops took control of the city. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He was initially buried in Europe. In August 1948 his body was returned home for reburial next to his parents in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, Iowa. VFW Post No. 3914 conducted services and extended military honors at graveside.
