Betsey Mangum Veazey was my great grandmother. My grandmother was one of her daughters (Mary Emma Veazey Teasley). The children she had that carried the surname of Mangum (which was her maiden name) were fathered by Ben Ellis. From the oral history I have discovered this was not a secret in the community. Ben Ellis also fathered other children with other women who were married or later married others. He also had a family of his own. Elijah Veazey (Betsey Mangum’s husband and my great grandfather) raised the children she had when they married as his own although they always knew Ben Ellis was their father. From what I have been told, this was not an uncommon happening during the Civil War years.
