Winford McMichael, the son of W. Grover and Jennie (Hunsaker) McMichael, was born December 28, 1913, on the "old B. J. Gilbert Farm" located one and one-half miles south of Grover Hill in Latty Township. He attended school at Rimer, Ohio, and Grover Hill. He was married to Evelyn Youtsey of Van Wert of Van Wert, Ohio, September 5, 1936, and they were the parents of two children. After being called into the Army, through Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, he received his military training at Camp Blanding, Florida, and departed for overseas about December 26, 1944. In combat, as a member of Company K, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Division of the Seventh Army, he was killed in action in the Schweinheim-Aschaffenburg area of Germany, March 30, 1945. He was buried in a United States military cemetery near Metz, France. His body was returned to his native land, arriving at Grover Hill January 27, 1949, and a memorial service was held at the Zion M.E. Church on January 29, 1949. His final earthly resting place is in the Woodland Cemetery at Van Wert, Ohio.
