She was born Virginia Ellis, a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. George F. Ellis, her father, a Methodist minister in the Alabama Conference. Magnolia, Ala, was her birthplace, and she was graduated from Alabama Female College with an A.B. degree in 1886 - at the age of 18.
On Oct. 29, 1891, she was married to J.T. Griswold at Greensboro, Ala., and they left immediately for Corsicana, Tex., where he joined the old Northwest Methodist Conference. His first appointment was the Benjamin circuit. He later held pastorates at Lubbock, Sweetwater, Clarendon, Stamford, Childress, Colorado and other churches. In 1932 he was appointed to the First Methodist church at Baird, a position he resigned in 1935 to retire.
Dr. and Mrs. Griswold bought a home in Clyde.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters - Mrs. O.B. Hundley of Santiago, Chile, and Mrs. Hubert Seale, wife of an Abilene physician; sons: Dr. C.M. Griswold, Houston and Jackson V. Griswold of Albany, NY; eight grandchildren;
Funeral will be at 10 Tuesday morning at the Clyde Methodist church. Rev. Alsie H. Carleton, Clyde minister in charge, assisted by the Rev. C.A. Bickley of Abilene, district superintendent. The Rev. F.P. Culver of Olney gave the sermon. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Abilene, directed by the Patterson Funeral Home of Clyde.
Mr. and Mrs. Griswold have attended many of the annual Stamford College Exes’ reunions here in Stamford. Mr. Griswold was one of the early presidents of the college and Mrs. Griswold was in charge of the girls’ dormitory.
