Son of Zeno Weddington & Eleanor “Ella” (ENGLISH) GARRETT, who married 31 MAR 1871 in Muscogee County, Georgia. William is aged 3 years in his parents’ household on the 1880 census of Militia District #1128 (Edwards District) in Muscogee County, Georgia. He appears unmarried in his parents’ 1900 census household in Ward 4 of Columbus, Georgia, and with his widowed mother in Militia District #921 (Bozeman District) of Muscogee County in 1910. He subsequently married – wife’s name unknown. Locomotive Engineer for the Central of Georgia Railroad. Father.

The dates on the grave marker are wrong. The birth date should read 10 JUL 1877 (instead of 1887). His death certificate was originally typed and showed a birth date of July 10, 1___; handwritten over this is the year “1879.” As mentioned, he was 3 years old on the 1880 census; the 1900 census shows he was born in Jul. 1877. Also, the date shown for his death on the grave marker, 05 DEC 1919, is actually the date of burial; he died on 04 DEC 1919.

“Mr. William M. GARRETT, aged 41 years, died at the family residence, 2007 Thomas avenue at 2:00 o’clock yesterday afternoon after an illness of six weeks with typhoid fever. Besides his wife he is survived by one small daughter, Emily; his mother, Mrs. Ella GARRETT of Columbus; two sisters, Mrs. W. E[rnest] BARROW of West Point, Ga., and Mrs. E. Frank MURRAY of Columbus; four brothers: J. M., E. E., Z. W., and T. C. GARRETT of Columbus. // Mr. GARRETT was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and was held in the highest esteem by his fellow workers. He was also a consistent member of the Rose Hill Methodist church. // The funeral will take place from the home at 3 o’clock this afternoon. Rev. J. A. THOMAS will conduct the services and the interment will be at Linwood cemetery. // The following gentlemen have been requested to act as pallbearers: W. P. WRIGHT, A. L. SCOTT, J. K. McCRANEY, H. H. HALL, H. H. THOMPSON and J. T. HENSON.” [Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun newspaper, Friday, 05 DEC 1919, p. 2.]

Mary Jane Galer's list of persons interred in the New Cemetery area of Linwood shows: Wm. M. GARRETT, married male, born 10 JUL 1879 in Georgia, died aged 40 years at 2007 Thomas Avenue [Columbus, Georgia] of typhoid fever; buried 05 DEC 1919 in the Old Cemetery section [Autry I-77]; reinterred 12 FEB 1921 to Section D, Lot 43 1/2 [Autry J-275 “ADAMS” on step], by undertaker [C. H.] HERRING, reference local death certificate #7547. (The Sexton’s record also indicates that on the same date, 12 FEB 1921, the grave of William’s father Zeno Weddington GARRETT, was reinterred from D-43 1/2 (Autry J-275 “ADAMS” on step) to the Old Cemetery section (Autry I-77) – so in other words, the graves of the son and the father were exchanged, probably so that Z. W. GARRETT would be buried in the same lot with his wife. What this also means is that, although William has a marked grave in Autry’s I-77, he is actually buried in Autry’s J-275.)
