Tuesday morning at 3:30 o'clock at his home here occurred the death of James Shannon, after an illness of about ten days duration from infirmities of old age. He was born and married in County Donegal, Ireland, and came to America in 1852, locating in Rock Island, Ill, where he owned a large track of choice timber and coal land which he afterwards sold and moved to Le Claire about thirty years ago. At the beginning of the Civil war, he enlisted in Co. K, 20th Iowa Infantry (this should be Co. E, 126th Illinois), with which he fought throughout and received an honorable discharge. He is survived by four daughters and one son as follows: Mrs. J. C. Swank of Coal Valley, Ill.; Mrs. James Williams of Albia, Iowa; Mrs. John Eyers (sic) of Cuba, Ill.; and Mrs. John Fairlie of Cambridge, Ill., and James Shannon of Silvis, Ill., also two brothers, Hugh of Rock Island and Robert, and one sisters, Mrs. Wm. Nesbitt, Sr., of this place. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 from the home, under the auspices of the John R. Bucksman post of which he was a member, and the remains were laid to rest in the City cemetery.
